Mosquito verde en viña

Green leafhopper in vineyard: how to deal with this pest

Mosquito verde en viña

The detection of green leafhopper pests in vineyard has put wine growers on alert at a key moment of the grape season, just a few weeks after harvesting time begins. Several official bodies have warned of the substantial increase of mobile forms of green leafhopper in vineyard, as high population scenarios have appeared in which it is foreseeable to exceed the treatment thresholds.

In Spain, the Department of Plant Protection of the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia) has issued warnings to producers in the central area of the province. The same occurs with the Network of Alert and Phytosanitary Information of the Junta de Andalucía  as several spots have been detected in the province of Malaga. In Toledo, ASAJA  has also confirmed the presence of this pest in vineyards in the district of Méntrida and La Torre de Esteban Hambrán. In these areas, caution is even greater after the devastating plague that farmers suffered last crop.

Green leafhopper in vineyard results in an insect between 2 and 3 mm in length. It is placed on the underside of leaves and is used to fly at the slightest movement. Green leafhopper attacks the nerves of leaves, as it feeds on the plant sap. Its effect is extremely detrimental because it stops the vegetative development and, consequently, the fruit ripening. Visually, the most evident consequence is the marginal desiccation of leaves, which turn yellow.

The most intense presence of green leafhopper in vineyard usually occurs during summer because of high temperatures, warm and dry weather conditions. Economic losses for growers can be significant because the effects can be extended in the post-attack season, with a possible decrease in sprout vigor and crop yield.

Treatments for green leafhopper in vineyard

The scenario caused by the proliferation of green leafhopper in vineyard (Empoasca vitis Goethe) in Spain has also occurred in Europe, as a substantial increase in the population of cicadellidae has been observed in recent years. Seipasa has produced Pirecris®, a natural biopesticide showing an excellent performance in the control of several species of cicadellidae in vineyard.

The active ingredient of Pirecris® guarantees its efficacy and knock-down effect. In addition, the formulation of a high technology product has allowed Seipasa to obtain the product, guaranteeing a ‘green’ profile based on a plant matrix that enhances the action.

Pirecris® efficacy against the green leafhopper has been tested through more than 18 field trials conducted in several countries. One of them is the one carried out in the south of France during the summer of 2014. For this trial, a complete randomized block with 4 repetitions and 5 treatments was unfolded: an untreated control, Pirecris at 3 different doses (1; 1.5 and 2l / ha) and a reference chemical pyrethroid (0.125 l / ha). Two applications (A and B) were performed: the first one, on July 2014 and the second 7 days later. The number of larvae in 50 inner leaves was evaluated at 3 and 7 days after each application.

As shown in figure 1, the first application of Pirecris® significantly reduced E.vitis populations. These populations were lower than the ones in the control treatment for all doses tested.

Figure 1.- Evolution of the number of E.vitis larvae found in 50 leaves. A: first application; B: second application. Samples made at 0, 3 and 7 days after each application.

Green leafhopper populations remained low in all treatments with Pirecris during subsequent samplings, especially after the second application. The results are similar to those obtained by the reference treatment. The efficacies obtained in this trial were high (about 90%), especially with the medium and high doses (1.5 and 2 l / ha), surpassing those obtained by the reference pyrethroid (see figure 2).

Figure 2.- Evaluation of the Abbott efficacy of Pirecris and the reference pyrethroids against E.vitis in vineyard corresponding to samples taken at 0, 3 and 7 days after each application.

The results prove that Pirecris® is a solid and efficient alternative for the treatment of the green leafhopper in the vineyard. This solution, 100% natural and free of chemical residues, is fully aligned with the needs of producers and consumers towards a rational, sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Enfermedades de madera de la vid

Strategies for grapevine trunk diseases

Enfermedades de madera de la vid

Grapevine trunk diseases are among the most serious problems affecting crops at the present time. When summer comes, cultivation of grapevine enters a decisive period. Preserving it in optimal conditons is fundamental, as it results in a pivotal element supporting many local and regional economies.

This is the reason why studies on grapevine trunk diseases proliferate at a key moment for the sector. Farmers are struggling to look after the current harvest, but cannot overlook the following season. In July, the city of Reims (France) hosts an international conference with a large group of experts on this subject.

Grapevine trunk diseases have become more evident in the last decade because of the advances in knowledge concerning fungal species taking part in the process of wood deterioration.

Intensified production, the aging of vineyards and the long period of time that may elapse between the penetration of fungi and the display of the first symptoms (in some cases, grapevine trunk diseases may already exist in those seedlings coming from the plant nursery) are factors that may explain why farmers are increasingly being affected by these diseases.

The absence of registered fungicidal active substances capable of dealing with these pathogens leads to reinforce preventive measures to restrain fungi from entering or penetrating wood. Practices and knowledge developed for years suggest farmers to use a pruning system that minimizes cuts, since the transmission of grapevine trunk diseases is produced through pruning wounds.

In addition to avoiding thick wounds, not only do cultural practices recommend pruning in dry weather conditions but it is also important to let a few days pass after an episode of rainfall.

Advances in grapevine trunk diseases also point to use hot-water treatment as a method to reduce infections caused by wood fungi in propagating material. Application of hot-water treatment has been approached by David Gramaje, researcher of the Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y el Vino (ICVV) at the international meeting promoted by Phytoma in March 2017.

Grapevine trunk diseases: activation of the defense system

Preventive actions also recommend using treatments capable of stimulating plant’s defense system. Superbrotal is a natural solution produced by Seipasa. This product performs as an activator of the processes involved in sprouting and plant structuring. Superbrotal stimulates the defense mechanisms due to its main compound, which induces the synthesis of those proteins involved in the immune system.

Not only does Superbrotal activate self-defenses, but it also strengthens the vascular bundles of the plant, generating a better translocation of nutrients in favor and against the gravitational gradient. It results in a balanced crop, with a powerful, structured and efficient plant development. Crops gain in size and foliar architecture, improving its ability to overcome stresses.

To set an example, there is a trial conducted by Seipasa in grapevine between 2014 and 2016 (see figure 1). The results show the inducing effect of Superbrotal. The trial was performed on a plot where vascular diseases had been experienced before. After the first campaign in 2014, disease incidence increased in the control area. However, as observed in figure 1, Superbrotal was able to improve sap flow by reducing the percentage of affected vineyards in the following campaigns (2015 and 2016).

Stimulation of the defense system helps to prevent stresses. Prevention may become a suitable strategy to avoid the penetration or progression of fungal diseases.

Bioestimuante radicular

Root biostimulant in spring vegetable crops

Bioestimuante radicular

Applying a root biostimulant in spring vegetables crops for a powerful development results in a pivotal factor to ensure an optimum yield.

Crops must cope with a wide range of unfavorable situations so as to achieve optimum performance. Together with pests and diseases, and within the context of climate change, there are more and more situations of environmental stress occurring. These factors lead to production decline, both in quality and quantity. Thus, regulating plant growth ends in a highly important factor, which will mark the productivity of crops.

In crops, a powerful starting is always synonymous with safe harvesting. Therefore, the treatments applied in initial stages play an essential role in the later development. With the calendar well into the month of May, the last frosts of spring have been left behind. The weeks that arrive ahead will take us into summer.

Thus, hot days with many hours of sunshine begin to become common, creating a favorable scenario to obtain the maximum yield in summer crops like tomato, pepper, eggplant, melon or watermelon. The cultivation of vegetables in spring has begun during winter months by preparing the seedbeds. Later, in spring, we proceed to field transplantation.

In southern regions like Almeria, this calendar is slightly modified when it comes to greenhouse plantations. Seedbeds have been prepared in July, and transplantation is delayed until the months of August-September.

Irrespective of the calendar, the application of a root biostimulant is well recommended within the first stages of cultivation. By using it, a broad, dense and branched root development is promoted in the plant.

A better plant development results in crops being more tolerant to the most unfavorable environmental conditions. Crops are also more capable of resisting disease entry. In addition, it allows better absorption of nutrients, so that apart from achieving better yields (and fewer losses), the quality of the crop will be higher.

Root biostimulant: growth and nutrient uptake

Seiland is a biostimulant to be applied at the time of transplantation, just within the first stage of cultivation in the field. The solution produced by Seipasa contains a mixture of microorganisms colonizing the ecological niche that roots occupy and creating a biological barrier that is beneficial for crops.

Seiland is high in organic matter. It provides carbon and nitrogen to the soil. These elements are needed for the installation and development of microorganisms. Its action allows to colonize the root area so as to protect it from being attack by pathogens.

The microorganisms of Seiland provide substances activating defense mechanisms, as well as elements and substances beneficial to plant development. The application of Seiland also allows to stimulate the activity of the microbial flora of the soil. Therefore, nutrients are more accessible to plants, allowing a more efficient use of fertilizers.

The application of a root biostimulant in spring vegetable crops is especially visible from initial stages. Not only does this process contribute to a correct plant development, but it also helps the plant to complete its cycle properly. It means not being conditioned by the different stresses in initial stages, when crops are more vulnerable.

calcio en los cultivos

Calcium in crops: why proper assimilation is important

calcio en los cultivos

Calcium in crops plays a key role in agricultural development. Its existence guarantees firmer fruits. Agricultural calcium is necessary not only in structural strengthening of walls but also in the elasticity of the vegetal tissue. It is essential to have resistant and healthy plants.

Calcium shortage severely affects the quality of fruits and crop yield. This is the reason why an inappropriate assimilation can cause losses in the market value. Fortunately, there are treatments to improve calcium assimilation in crops. Its application is markedly necessary at the beginning of spring, when climatic conditions such as thermal amplitude between day and night can subject plants to stressful situations.

Calcium in crops is transported internally by xylem, but calcium has low mobility within the plant. Translocation results in a difficult process, since only a small percentage of calcium is translocated to the fruits from the surrounding leaves.

There are many climatic factors affecting calcium assimilation in crops. High temperatures on sunny days, wet and dry winds, and low relative humidity may become factors promoting high levels of transpiration. When this transpiration stream is too high towards the foliar organs, contribution of calcium to the fruit is restricted. In other words, for calcium is more difficult to reach those organs with low transpiration rate.

As we saw in an earlier entry, calcium deficiency in crops is observed in alterations such as BER (blossom end rot) in tomato and pepper. In strawberry or lettuce symptoms are perceived at the end of the expanding leaves (tip burn).

Guaranteeing contribution of calcium in crops

By evaluating calcium status in plants, it is possible to diagnose disorders like BER. In order to prevent such deficiencies, Seipasa has developed the Calcisei line of products. These products, formulated with calcium, play a pivotal role in crop development. Besides contributing to prevent deficiencies such as BER, tip burn or bitter pit in tomato and apple, the Calcisei line is specifically prepared for the structural strengthening of cell walls and membranes, as well as the management of soils with high content of salt.

Within this line, Calimax is a treatment designed to prevent calcium deficiencies in crops while confronting physiopathies. Calimax improves soil structure, promotes optimal root development and regulates imbalances due to lack of calcium.

Guadal Ca has been produced to avoid problems of internal decay and cracked fruits, as well as to confront apical rot, tip burn in horticultural crops. Lack of calcium usually concentrates on young leaves and fruits, since these are the organs having major transpiration difficulties. Guadal Ca is especially recommended for foliar applications in the second half of the crop cycle given the rapid absorption and total safety.

Apart from the contribution of calcium, the organic matter content of the Calcisei line brings significant benefits to the crop, especially in the post-harvest quality.

Soil correctors

Farmers are aware of how important is to have calcium in soils. Calcium deficiencies in plants can be observed in soils where there is an excess of nitrogen fertilizer, in substrates with alkaline pH, with episodes of water stress or with salt excess, among other factors. Within the Calcisei line, Miñosal is a corrector of saline and saline-sodic soils. It can be used both in soils having salinity problems and in areas where irrigation water quality makes it necessary.

Organic fertilizers for olive trees

Organic fertilizers for olive trees. Advantages versus manure and conventional fertilizers

Organic fertilizers for olive trees

The organic fertilizers for olive trees are an essential element for the soil health of these crops. The advantages of an organic bottom fertilizer, used in the first cycles, versus manure or conventional fertilizers, are not only observed in the most immediate campaign, but also in the plant health and the quality of the long-term production.

Although nutrients are naturally found in the substrate, they are not replenished fast enough to maintain soil fertility. Hence, it is necessary to make additional contributions. But which fertilizer to use?

Before choosing one or the other to include in the subscriber plan it is advisable to carry out a soil and leaf analysis to know the exact needs of each crop. Some parameters such as soil characteristics and composition, type of plant, age, agricultural practices, water status or planting density should be taken into account.

Nowadays, one of the most advanced organic formulations for the basal dressing is Organitro, from SEIPASA, rich in nitrogen and 100% organic.

Organic fertilizers for olive trees vs. dung

– The dung contains high humidity and is not stable. Thus, in contrast to the dung variability, the complete organic fertilizers guarantee the fertilizer units (N, F, K).

– Dung can contain seeds of weeds or pathogens that can be transferred to the crop.

– If some dungs rich in macronutrients such as nitrogen are not mixed with other poorer or plant remains, they tend to be imbalanced despite composting.

– In organic farming, many dungs are not allowed: Those from intensive farms may be contaminated with residues of pesticides, antibiotics or heavy metals.

Organic fertilizers for olive trees vs. conventional fertilizers

– Conventional mineral fertilizer gives the plant nutrients available immediately, but it is easier to apply in excess or deficiency. It does not amend the soil, simply feeds the vegetable.

– The organic fertilizer is less aggressive to the soil. Conventional can salinize the substrate. It can increase toxic salts if applied in large quantities.

– With the use of chemical fertilizers there is a risk of contamination of the underground and surrounding water.

– The application of synthetic fertilizers can also lead to degradation of soil life by eliminating microorganisms useful for plant nutrition.

– Applying organic fertilizers allows the action of the soil microorganisms to degrade the fertilizer to form water soluble compounds, which the plant takes advantage of.

– Organic fertilization also favors the proliferation of bacteria and fungi that benefit the soil and help the best use of nutrients by the plant.

– In short, they improve the structure of the substrate, allow carbon fixation and favor the ability of the crop to retain nutrients and water.

Organic fertilizers of reference for olive trees

Organic fertilizers for olive treesFor the basal dressing, one of the best options is the complete fertilizer with Organitro.

The high organic matter content of this fertilizer substantially improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil.

It is easy to handle in the application thanks to the pelletizing. It is distributed with great uniformity in the soil, allowing an immediate availability when disintegrating in only five minutes in the presence of water and dissolving completely in no more than four hours.  It achieves a maximum valuation of the supplied fertilizer units.

It has a dual nutritional effect: the combination of fast-release nutrients and elements that ensure fertility in the medium term after undergoing mineralization processes. It allows the formation of organo-metallic complexes. Thus, it stabilizes micronutrients of the soil that would otherwise not be usable.

Organitro increases the cation exchange capacity and acts as a buffering agent by reducing the tendency to a sudden change in soil pH when acid or alkaline reaction substances are applied.

To have an oxygenated soil, with good structure and balanced in its nutrients is the ideal thing so that the farmer can obtain good yields, and references like this are basic.

Organic solid and liquid fertilizers

In addition to Organitro, belonging to the Seivital line (solid organic), SEIPASA offers another type of 100% organic fertilizers, guaranteed with the corresponding ecological certificate, and ideal for integrated production.

The liquid organic fertilizers of the line Multisei are also placed as regenerative models of soils for their ability to balance the nutrient substrate, improving its structure, its composition and microbial activity.

They promote the formation of aggregates in the soil that improve the friability of the land facilitating agricultural work and avoiding flooding and root suffocation.

They incorporate in their formulation raw materials of vegetal origin with a high degree of refinement that avoid problems of precipitates and seals in systems of drip irrigation.

The Terrasei line is the answer of SEIPASA to the nutritional needs of crops in different phenological states, since it combines mineral nutrition and the energy and soil structure of organic fertilization.

Organic fertilizers company

SEIPASA is a leader company in R+D+i research, both in phytosanitary products and in organic fertilization, making organic fertilizers available to farmers to improve the yield of olive and other crops.

Insecticidas naturales contra la mosca blanca en tomate. El poder de Nakar.

Natural insecticides against whiteflies on Tomato Plants

Whitefly pests are causing serious problems in the Spanish tomato crops, especially due to the transmission of viruses such as Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV). Hence the importance of combating this problem through an integrated management that includes effective natural insecticides against whitefly on tomato plants.

In order to keep the whitefly population at bay, integrated pest management is the best method of action. Its objective is the rational and efficient control of pests and diseases, minimizing the amount of residues in the products to be harvested. It is necessary combine cultural measures, biological control and phytosanitary treatments, with priority of natural ones versus chemicals.

Farmers do not find it easy to find specialized, effective natural formulations that do not leave residues in the crop, but they exist.

The best natural insecticides against whiteflies on tomato plants

Natural insecticides against whiteflies on Tomato Plants

Among all the natural insecticides against whiteflies on tomato plants, Nakar product stands out given the good results it has demonstrated in trials and in commercial application, and given its high specialization. It is a bioinsecticide that presents excellent contact control of soft shell insects in all stages of development and especially of the whitefly in tomato.

Its state-of-the-art formulation gives it the ability to penetrate and fragment the lipoprotein matrix of insect cell membranes. The disruption of the membrane causes the evacuation of the cellular contents causing the dehydration and death of the insects.

Given its natural origin and its compatibility with the action of the natural predators and parasitoids of the whitefly is an ideal tool for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), so that the insecticide’s power is combined with the biological control action.

Along the same lines, Pirecris, an insecticide based on natural pyrethrins, is made with co-formulants of botanical origin, totally natural, so it does not use Piperonil Peroxide (PBO) as synergist. Its formula is patented.

Advantages of the natural insecticides against the whiteflies on tomato plants

1.- No security deadlines

These natural insecticides do not have safety period. In fact, both Pirecris and Nakar can be applied even the day before harvesting.

 2.- Resistance management

Optimum result in resistance management strategies.

3.- Efficacy in all biological stages of insects

Although their efficacy develops over all biological stages of insects, the insects are more vulnerable to the effects of the active substance in its immature stages of development and non-flying phases.

 4.- Wetting effect

The fact that whitefly populations are placed on the underside of the leaves conditions the effectiveness of the products that act by contact, so it is advisable to use wetters.

However, Nakar has achieved a potentiating and wetting effect, so that it improves adhesion in spray applications. Moreover, it increases the adhesion of other treatments because it decreases the surface tension of the water and increases the contact surface, as well as the contact time between the pathogen and the applied active material.

5.- Avoid molasses and bold in the crops

The whitefly secretes a species of molasses that hinders the growth of the plant because it interferes with photosynthesis and causes less vigor and, therefore, a worse quality in the fruits. This molasses favors the attack of the fungus that causes the bold in leaves, flowers and fruits, and also reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the vegetable and its respiration, depreciating the quality of the harvest, but also hindering the penetration of phytosanitary treatments.

Besides its potential as a natural insecticide, Nakar contributes to the cleaning of these molasses produced by attacks of sucking insects such as the whiteflies, in a way that avoids the fatal spread of fungi. In the same way, Nakar cleans the bold formed by the fungi.

6.- Efficiency comparable to chemicals

The different tests carried out with the bio-insecticide Nakar (SEIPASA) have shown that the efficacy of this natural insecticide equals the reference chemical in whitefly control, with the added value of not leaving residues and being suitable for integrated and ecological production.

In the last study carried out by researchers at the Technological Park of Almería (Tecnova) on integrated control of whitefly on greenhouse tomato, results confirmed the high efficiency of Nakar on immature and adult populations of this pest, cutting off their biological reproduction.

The synergy of this product with the action of Pirecris was conclusive in the control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

Biostimulant Kynetic4

Biostimulant for flowering and fruit set: Kynetic4® acts in this way

Kynetic4® biostimulant represents a significant energy boost that gets better bloom, an optimal pollination and fertilization, and an excellent fruit set. It also acts as a protective barrier against possible plant stress conditions

Watch in this video the spectacular results of  the application of  this latest generation biostimulant

The action of the SEIPASA’s specialized biostimulant Kynetic4® on vegetable and fruit evidence a significant increase in the harvest. This cause and effect relationship has been demonstrated in research by agronomists. In the almond crops tested, productivity increases between 8% and 15%, reaching values even higher in vegetables. In fact, the application of Kynetic4® in zucchini reduces the use of hormone in about 60% with no significant differences between the different tested treatments.

These are just some of the results of the various tests carried out with this biostimulant, which have reported excellent results, a fact that farmers who have used it are already showing their crops.

But what is what brings Kynetic4® to get these quotas profitability? Based on the action of a studied combination of physiological intermediaries and vegetable amino acids, this biostimulant provides crops short chain substances rapidly assimilated by the plant, and peptides of long chain that improve adherence and effect of the product.

Flowering, fertilization  and flower set

Since its application involves an energy stimulation at times of peak demand, its employment is key in important stages such as flowering, fertilization and fruit set.

Kynetic4® manages to increase its vegetative growth and improve final output, not only in terms of quantitative parameters but also qualitative. Color, smoothness, size and taste are favored by the application of this biestimulant created thanks to recent advances in natural technology.

Effective pollination

With the application of a this formulated, the crop can achieve an effective pollination less determined by the natural factors that influence it, such as air temperatura (heat accelerates and cold retards the growth of the pollen tube, although it should be noted that high temperatures also accelerate the degeneration of stigma and decrease the longevity of the egg), rain (rain can wash the stigma and prevent the continuation of the process of fertilization), the amount of pollen captured or nutritional status of the plant.

In spite of the fact that the latter aspect requires appropriate management of fertilization since the beginning of cycle to avoid deficiencies during fertilization, the use of Kynetic4® manages to take advantage to the most of the nutrients in this stage.

Powerful action against crop stress

Also, Kynetic4® provides greater adaptability of the plant to stress conditions: drought, frost, transplants, extreme temperatures, diseases, pests…

This biostimulant keeps crops in excellent health vegetable to successfully face these situations and, once overcome the circumstances of stress, stimulates the recovery of the plant, since it promotes the restoration of plant tissues.

Furthermore, as an added value, it has high efficiency as a natural chelator, unblocking soils and facilitating absorption and assimilation of other compounds.

Promotes the effect of foliar fertilizers and herbicides

In this regard, polypeptides compounds in Kynetic4® formulation reduce surface tension and facilitate its use as a synergist in applying foliar fertilizers, facilitating their absorption, and herbicides, promoting their effect.

Specially selected amino acids in this biostimulant play its action on interest routes improving nutrient uptake and inducing protein and phytohormone synthesis .

This way, glutamic acid stimulates the growth of root, leaf and floral meristems, favors the opening of the stomata and plays an important role in plant nitrogen as a nature reserve.

Glycine, glutamic with, is essential in the formation of plant tissue and chlorophyll synthesis, and promotes the transport of micronutrients by the plant.
