Green leafhopper in vineyard: how to deal with this pest

The detection of green leafhopper pests in vineyard has put wine growers on alert at a key moment of the grape season, just a few weeks after harvesting time begins. Several official bodies have warned of the substantial increase of mobile forms of green leafhopper in vineyard, as high population scenarios have appeared in which it is foreseeable to exceed the treatment thresholds.

In Spain, the Department of Plant Protection of the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia) has issued warnings to producers in the central area of the province. The same occurs with the Network of Alert and Phytosanitary Information of the Junta de Andalucía  as several spots have been detected in the province of Malaga. In Toledo, ASAJA  has also confirmed the presence of this pest in vineyards in the district of Méntrida and La Torre de Esteban Hambrán. In these areas, caution is even greater after the devastating plague that farmers suffered last crop.

Green leafhopper in vineyard results in an insect between 2 and 3 mm in length. It is placed on the underside of leaves and is used to fly at the slightest movement. Green leafhopper attacks the nerves of leaves, as it feeds on the plant sap. Its effect is extremely detrimental because it stops the vegetative development and, consequently, the fruit ripening. Visually, the most evident consequence is the marginal desiccation of leaves, which turn yellow.

The most intense presence of green leafhopper in vineyard usually occurs during summer because of high temperatures, warm and dry weather conditions. Economic losses for growers can be significant because the effects can be extended in the post-attack season, with a possible decrease in sprout vigor and crop yield.

Treatments for green leafhopper in vineyard

The scenario caused by the proliferation of green leafhopper in vineyard (Empoasca vitis Goethe) in Spain has also occurred in Europe, as a substantial increase in the population of cicadellidae has been observed in recent years. Pirecris® efficacy against the green leafhopper has been tested through more than 18 field trials conducted in several countries. One of them is the one carried out in the south of France during the summer of 2014. For this trial, a complete randomized block with 4 repetitions and 5 treatments was unfolded: an untreated control, Pirecris at 3 different doses (1; 1.5 and 2l / ha) and a reference chemical pyrethroid (0.125 l / ha). Two applications (A and B) were performed: the first one, on July 2014 and the second 7 days later. The number of larvae in 50 inner leaves was evaluated at 3 and 7 days after each application.

As shown in figure 1, the first application of Pirecris® significantly reduced E.vitis populations. These populations were lower than the ones in the control treatment for all doses tested.

Green leafhopper populations remained low in all treatments with Pirecris during subsequent samplings, especially after the second application. The results are similar to those obtained by the reference treatment. The efficacies obtained in this trial were high (about 90%), especially with the medium and high doses (1.5 and 2 l / ha), surpassing those obtained by the reference pyrethroid (see figure 2).

The results prove that Pirecris® is a solid and efficient alternative for the treatment of the green leafhopper in the vineyard. Calcium in crops: why proper assimilation is important

Calcium in crops plays a key role in agricultural development. Its existence guarantees firmer fruits. Agricultural calcium is necessary not only in structural strengthening of walls but also in the elasticity of the vegetal tissue. It is essential to have resistant and healthy plants.

Calcium shortage severely affects the quality of fruits and crop yield. This is the reason why an inappropriate assimilation can cause losses in the market value. Fortunately, there are treatments to improve calcium assimilation in crops. Its application is markedly necessary at the beginning of spring, when climatic conditions such as thermal amplitude between day and night can subject plants to stressful situations.

Calcium in crops is transported internally by xylem, but calcium has low mobility within the plant. Translocation results in a difficult process, since only a small percentage of calcium is translocated to the fruits from the surrounding leaves.

There are many climatic factors affecting calcium assimilation in crops. High temperatures on sunny days, wet and dry winds, and low relative humidity may become factors promoting high levels of transpiration. When this transpiration stream is too high towards the foliar organs, contribution of calcium to the fruit is restricted. In other words, for calcium is more difficult to reach those organs with low transpiration rate.

As we saw in an earlier entry, calcium deficiency in crops is observed in alterations such as BER (blossom end rot) in tomato and pepper. In strawberry or lettuce symptoms are perceived at the end of the expanding leaves (tip burn).

Guaranteeing contribution of calcium in crops

By evaluating calcium status in plants, it is possible to diagnose disorders like BER. In order to prevent such deficiencies, Seipasa has developed the Calcisei line of products. These products, formulated with calcium, play a pivotal role in crop development. Weed control in extensive agriculture results in an essential task to ensure a better crop yield. World cereal production in 2016 is 2.600 million tonnes. The latest FAO report forecasts that production will exceed 7.9 million tonnes (+ 0.3%) as predicted in February. Figures for the 2016/17 season exceed the record production obtained in 2014/2015 by more than one point, according to the International Grains Council.

In Spain, data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing, Food and Environment indicate that an average of 6 million hectares of cereals are grown. This is the sector with greater territorial base and with a distribution throughout the whole territory. The Ministry considers that 42.8% of production is barley while 30.1% corresponds to soft wheat.

Because of its role in diet and food production, cereal farming is a key element on the board of the world economy. Due to its increasing importance, it is necessary to produce instruments for weed control in extensive agriculture, given its immediate impact on crop production and yield levels.

Yield increase with each of the treatments was also evaluated in this trial. As shown in figure 1, the best results were obtained when Kynetic4 was applied.

Weed control in sugar beet farming

Applying Kynetic4 together with herbicides in sugar beet farming allows to obtain higher efficacies in weed control in extensive agriculture. Global production of sugar beet in the 2016/17 season is forecasted at 171 million tonnes, according to International Sugar Organization Brazil, India and the EU are the main producers. The importance of this crop requires the implementation of tools ensuring optimum performance.

Seipasa researched on the supply of Kynetic4 together with a herbicide program on sugar beet farming. The test, conducted in Belgium (Faimes), aimed to assess the benefits of a normal program of herbicide treatments together with Seipasa’s biostimulants. The purpose was to enhance the herbicide effect at the time the crop received biostimulation in its growth. The test was also applied to reduce the stress effect caused by chemical elements.

Four post-emergence applications of the usual herbicide program used in the region were carried out. The active ingredients of the 3 products were ethofumesate + fenmedifam + desmedipham; metamitron and clomazone.

Also, 3 products were included to evaluate compared effectiveness not only on weed control but also on the effects they could produce in the crop. Two additional evaluations were performed during the time elapsed between applications. An addition, a third evaluation was conducted 27 days after the last application of the 3 herbicide programs.

Kynetic4 shows similar performance compared to the reference product, but better than using animal amino acids. Efficacy of the combined use can be observed in figure 2. Kynetic4 in sugar beet cultivation improves the assimilation of treatments and stimulates the development of the crop, producing better and higher yields.

Treatments for olive trees after winter are widely recognized to prevent diseases and to obtain a homogenous harvest each season, thus forgetting the feared alternation of production. Preparatory treatments are applied at an early stage and aim to adapt the olive tree to achieve a good flowering.

The months of January and February are suitable to apply pruning work at the olive tree, allowing to set a proper structure within the production of the following campaign.

Although depending on climate and varieties, towards the end of March the flower buds have already begun to appear. For this trial, four different treatments were proposed: T1, corresponding to the usual application of two hormones (ANA + ANA amide); T2, with the application in irrigation of KYNETIC4; T3, with the foliar application of KYNETIC4; and, finally, T4, which consists of combined applications of the hormone and KYNETIC4, reducing the amount of hormone used in T1 by almost 60%.

According to the results of the study, it is possible to reduce the use of hormonal products (T4) up to 60%, increasing the average weight of the marketable fruit with respect to the single use of hormones. (Graphic 1)

Whitefly pests are causing serious problems in the Spanish tomato crops, especially due to the transmission of viruses such as Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV). Hence the importance of combating this problem through an integrated management that includes effective natural insecticides against whitefly on tomato plants.

In order to keep the whitefly population at bay, integrated pest management is the best method of action. Its objective is the rational and efficient control of pests and diseases, minimizing the amount of residues in the products to be harvested. This molasses favors the attack of the fungus that causes the bold in leaves, flowers and fruits, and also reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the vegetable and its respiration, depreciating the quality of the harvest, but also hindering the penetration of phytosanitary treatments.

Besides its potential as a natural insecticide, Nakar contributes to the cleaning of these molasses produced by attacks of sucking insects such as the whiteflies, in a way that avoids the fatal spread of fungi. In the same way, Nakar cleans the bold formed by the fungi.

The different tests carried out with the bio-insecticide Nakar (SEIPASA) have shown that the efficacy of this natural insecticide equals the reference chemical in whitefly control, with the added value of not leaving residues and being suitable for integrated and ecological production.

In the last study carried out by researchers at the Technological Park of Almería (Tecnova) on integrated control of whitefly on greenhouse tomato, results confirmed the high efficiency of Nakar on immature and adult populations of this pest, cutting off their biological reproduction.

The synergy of this product with the action of Pirecris was conclusive in the control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

Calcareous soils, saline waters and two or three crops per year on the same land. These conditions that combine the horticultural crops of the southeast of Spain carry the risk of soil fatigue, which implies loss of vigor and productive yield of the plants.

The degradation of the structure and physical properties of the substrate accelerates the incidence of chemical and biological factors, such as nutrient deficiency due to exhaustion or blockage, contamination by phytotoxic ions or by pathogenic organisms, competition between microorganisms and cultivated plants, or loss of the biological balance of the soil by the use of disinfectants.

Being aware of this problem, producers are looking for solutions that maintain productivity and quality in their fields, and find great support in specialized organic fertilizers for this purpose such as Multisei and Terrasei.

Organic fertilizers to regenerate soils and increase fertility

Multisei also enhances the action of biostimulants and root protectors such as Seiland, a product of great capacity in the biological activation of the rhizosphere that becomes essential in the planting phase: “Promoting beneficial microorganisms of the soil provides a protective barrier and a reinforcement of the root system against pathogen attacks and root diseases”.

With the decrease in temperatures, horticulture especially need this boost to activate the plant. “Seiland encourages the crops to emit new roots and acts as biofertilizer because of its ability to fix nitrogen or solubilize phosphorus and because it provides beneficial substances and enzymes”, explain the technicians of SEIPASA.

In addition, the action of Terrasei as a bioactivator of nutrition is essential. As the technical personnel explain, although the references of the Terrasei line (liquid organomineral fertilizers) contain NPK, the true value of their complex formulation lies in the conjugation of these elements with other molecules that complement nutrition and facilitate nutritional absorption, provided that they are capable of unblocking the substratum and liberating the nutrients.

Terrasei products improve the efficiency of chemical fertilizers by increasing the cation exchange capacity and, consequently, the storage of nutrients in the soil. This represents a saving in the long run for the farmer since it allows to reduce the amount of pure synthetic fertilizers to apply.

“They incorporate, in addition to organic matter, fulvic acids and amino acids, which translates into a jolt of energy that allows the vegetable to dedicate metabolic resources to physiological functions”. The possibility of foliar use, besides irrigation, allows a rapid assimilation of nutrients.

The passage of SEIPASA along Fruit Attraction 2016 has concluded exceeding expectations. With large numbers of visitors throughout the whole fair, which was held from 5 to 7 October at the IFEMA fairgrounds, SEIPASA says goodbye satisfied by the great success of their products and new developments.

The new natural insecticides of SEIPASA Nakar and Pirecris have aroused great interest among professionals in the sector, given its high capacity to control pests – demonstrated with diverse independent tests – with the added value, with regard to the conventional products, of obtaining ‘Zero Residues‘ crops.

 

This was evidenced by the success of call in the technical talk devoted to explaining the properties, field efficiencies and integration strategies IPM (Integrated Pest Management) of new insecticides solutions Nakar and Pirecris by SEIPASA technical director, Javier Nácher.

During the event many attendees were interested in the SEIPASA latest developments.

The future of the agricultural sector was also present at the SEIPASA’s stand represented by a group of students from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The director of R&D+i department, Francisco Espinosa, responded to their concerns and showed them the great potential that natural treatments  can reach, most of them of botanical origin, after a thorough research and development to achieve the ideal formulation.

SEIPASA’s stand was also the scene of a meeting of all partners making up the consortium responsible for carrying out the ambitious European project Life+ Zero Residues (LIFE12 ENV/ES/000902: LIFE Zero Residues: towards a sustainable production and supply chain for stone fruit). The conclusions of this initiative, aimed at improving the quality and sustainability of production, conservation and marketing of stone fruit with the guarantee to be free of residues, speak of success.
